Manual handling is work where you have to lift, lower, push, pull, carry, move, hold or restrain something. For hazardous manual lifting, the hierarchy of controls must be used to apply the highest level of control that is practicable to still allow the work to be done.

Manual handling accidents, as a result of pushing, pulling or lifting heavy objects or machinery, account for more than a third of all reported accidents each year.

This short course trains how to safely lift according to the hierarchy of controls, beginning with eliminating the hazard by removing the need to manually lift an object. The course encourages the use of mechanical aids and for your employees to speak up if they think that a load is too heavy for them to safely lift by themselves.

Learning Outcomes:

At the completion of this course learners will:

  1. Apply the hierarchy of controls to manually lift a load.
  2. Defer lifting using mechanical aids wherever possible.
